Your guide to making the most of the shorter days

Posted 1 hour ago

Ways to keep your spirits up in the darker evenings

At 2am on Sunday 25 October, the clocks go back an hour. That means an extra hour in bed, but also sunset arriving well before dinner. The darker evenings can feel disheartening after a summer of longer days.

The good news is there’s plenty to do, and a few small habits can keep your spirits up. From cosy nights in with your hall community to getting out and about in the city, here’s how to make the most of the shorter days.

As the nights draw in, it’s also worth taking a few extra steps to stay safe. You’ll find our safety tips and more information below.

☀️ Get outside during daylight hours

Make the most of the sun while it’s out with a daily stroll, either in the morning or at lunchtime. Fresh air and daylight lift your mood, and getting your steps in helps you feel more energised. Even a short walk, or a quick trip to a local green space or café, can make a difference.

📅 Enjoy seasonal activities in the city

London really comes alive in the colder months. Wrap up warm and make the most of what’s on your doorstep, from markets and festive lights to ice skating and cosy pub quizzes. Many of the big seasonal events are free to wander round. Grab your flatmates and see what the city has to offer.

🏃🏻 Stay active

It’s harder to find the motivation to get outside and be active when it’s cold and dark, and we all feel it. But moving your body releases endorphins, which lift your mood and help beat the seasonal sluggishness.

There are real benefits to working out in colder temperatures too. Cooler air makes it easier to push through high-intensity cardio without overheating, and regular exercise keeps your heart healthy all year round.

🛏️ Make your hall bedroom feel cosy

Autumn and winter may be colder and darker, but it’s the perfect time to lean into the cosiness.

As the nights draw in, swap the big light for fairy lights, battery-powered candles or a lamp. A soft glow instantly makes a room feel warmer.

You can also decorate your room with handmade crafts or seasonal decor to make your room feel like yours.

💗 Enjoy cosy activities with your flatmates

Stay safe when you’re out and about

As the evenings get darker, it’s worth taking a few simple steps to help you feel safe when travelling around the city.

  • Keep your phone charged
  • Stick to well-lit main roads
  • Where possible, travel with friends
  • If you’re taking a taxi, use a registered service and when booking through an app, check the driver and vehicle details and share your journey

👉 Walking home alone? Strut Safe offers a free phone service where a volunteer can keep you company until you reach your destination.
