Posted 5 months ago

Here’s our guide on support available for UAL students

Outside of the support you will find at your hall, there are also a range of other UAL services available to help with the adjustment to life at university.

We have listed some useful resources below to assist you with your studies and life in London.

👩🏽‍🎓 Student Services 👩🏽‍🎓

UAL offers a range of student services which are available across the year:

We have a range of useful out-of-hours contacts for services at UAL and externally. You should always dial 999 in the event of a true emergency requiring the police, ambulance service or fire brigade.

📚 Togetherall 📚

As we nearly begin the new academic year, you might be feeling refreshed after your summer holidays, it’s understandable that you might be feeling the need to reset and plan out your next academic year.

Remember that as a UAL student, you can access Togetherall 24/7 throughout the year. They offer a diverse and safe online community, where students can feel safe to share their feelings, support each other, and start to feel better about any issues they are facing.

Whether you just need someone to chat to during your studies, or you have some more time to dive deeper into some of the challenges you’ve been facing, Togetherall courses that might be useful at this time include:

🚫 Use Tell Someone to report Bully or Harassment 🚫

If you see or experience any discrimination, bullying or harassment at UAL, you can report it through Tell Someone, where you can submit an anonymous report. We have a zero-tolerance approach and take all submissions seriously to promote a safe and inclusive environment.

📖 Academic support 📖

For many, summer is a time to disconnect from university and have fun. However, if your course continues throughout summer, you’re engaging in extra summer courses or work, or have a major project starting once you get back, remember that you can always use Academic Support Online (ASO). Explore resources, Q&As, and book tutorials, to expand and support your learning.

🏳️‍🌈 LGBTQ+ support 🏳️‍🌈

The University of the Arts London (UAL) offers a variety of support for LGBTQ+ students and staff, including:

🍻 Drugs and alcohol 🍻

It is important to get out and enjoy yourself whilst studying in London, but students should also think about the implications of having too much alcohol or taking drugs.

If you are worried about the effects of alcohol or drugs on you, or the amount you are taking, you can contact your doctor, the Health Adviser or the Mental Health Adviser by telephoning 020 7514 6251 or by email at studenthealth@arts.ac.uk

If you wish to report excessive alcohol or drugs consumption in your hall, you can report it to the university anonymously via Tell Someone.

The Drinkaware website includes information on the effects of alcohol, what alcohol units are, and provides advice on how to drink safely.

Drinkline (0800 917 8282) is a confidential helpline for those concerned about their own, or someone else’s, drinking, and can advise on how to access local support services.

The NHS Live Well website has specialised information on drugs, with support for giving up and a list of addiction support services.

FRANK is a confidential helpline for anyone in the UK concerned about drug use.

The NHS Addictions Provider Alliance is group that work collaboratively with service users, carers and other organisations who are committed to making a positive difference to the ongoing development of the addictions field, including within drug, alcohol, gambling and gaming treatment and support.

If you'd prefer to contact your halls team directly, you can find their contact information in your Halls Guide.

🗣️ Language support 🗣️

If you need additional support or want to practice your language skills during the summer, the Language Centre have plenty to offer.

  • Our self-study online English course will help you with the speaking, reading, writing and listening skills you need for your course subjects. To access the course, search 'Language Development' on your Moodle course page.
  • Language Development tutorials continue in the summer holidays. Book a tutorial to help with language for presentations, written reports, crits and research proposal skills. More tutorials are released each day for the following week so make sure to check regularly.

📓 Library Services 📓

If you’re a library fan like we are, you will be pleased to know that our libraries, learning zones and archives are open for you to access and take advantage of during your studies.

The libraries have open access and bookable study spaces with computers, photocopying and printing facilities. You can also borrow a laptop and get help from the library staff to develop your research or digital skills. Learn more about our library facilities at UAL

🏡 UAL Private Accommodation Adviser 🏡

If you are looking to move into private accommodation during your studies, we have a UAL Private Accommodation Adviser who can give you general advice on how you can look for private rentals with landlords and letting agents.

They are not able to book accommodation for you or direct you to specific properties. However, they will be available to answer your questions and provide you with professional advice to help you deal with problems when living in private accommodation.

Check out the list of general advice the UAL Private Accommodation Adviser can provide to you on for private accommodation in London.
