Fertilise your plants 🪴

Repurpose your coffee grounds into natural fertiliser, simply dry out the coffee grounds and sprinkle them onto the soil surrounding your plants. Repeat every 4-6 months to keep your plants happy and healthy.

Clean your cookware 🧽

The coarse texture of coffee grounds make them an ideal, natural alternative to using chemicals in cleaning. Sprinkle them onto a scrub brush or directly onto your items and use as a scourer to remove build-up on pots and pans, your sink and your cookware.

Make coffee candles 🕯

Love the smell of coffee? We don't blame you! Keep it around by making some simple DIY coffee candles using leftovers.

What you'll need:

  • 1 coffee mug
  • 1 natural candle wick
  • Spoon or popsicle stick
  • Recycled candle wax from old candles or new soy wax flakes (enough to fill your mug)
  • Superglue
  • 2 tbsp dried coffee grounds

Method:

  1. Clean and dry your coffee mug. Use superglue to glue one end of the wick to the bottom of the mug and let dry.
  2. Rest a spoon or popsicle stick on the top of the mug. Tie the other end of the wick to it so the wick stands up straight.
  3. Place wax in a glass measuring cup and put in a saucepan. Fill the saucepan with water until it reaches halfway up the measuring cup. Heat the water at medium-high heat until wax is melted.
  4. Remove measuring cup from the saucepan carefully. Pour a thin layer of wax into your mug.
  5. Sprinkle a light layer of coffee grounds around the edge of the mug, then add the rest of the wax to the mug. Add the remaining coffee grounds (making sure they're not too close to the wick as they will burn when lit).
  6. Let it dry for around an hour.
  7. Untie the wick from the spoon or popsicle stick and trim the end so it's only 1/4 inch long above the wax.

Exfoliate your skin 😌

Speaking of scouring, their texture also works well as an exfoliant for your skin. All you have to do is mix your coffee grounds with a bit of water or coconut oil and use your hands to scrub it on your body. Or, mix them with a small amount of honey and use as a lip scrub.

Turn them into art 🎨

Coffee grounds can make great paint, from creating different shades to experimenting with texture try them out in your next art project.

All you need to do is add a small amount of coffee grounds into a cup, add water and mix well with your brush. If you're wanting to make lighter or darker shades, use separate cups to add little or more water to your coffee grounds.

Use as a natural deodoriser 🫧

Sick of smelling the fragrant food in your fridge or have a pair of gym shoes that are starting to smell? Pop a bowl of coffee grounds in your fridge to neutralise odours or make portable air fresheners by filling your socks with them. Place them in your shoes, gym bag or wherever you need them to remove the smell.

Did you know you can even use them to scrub your hands after chopping garlic or onions to remove the odour? Very clever!
