Always finding your fruit and veg starting to spoil before you use it? Make them last longer by learning the best way to store your staple fresh ingredients.
As some of the most wasted foods, you can help make a difference by saving food from going to waste while saving yourself a lot of money long-term.
Follow these tips to help you keep your five-a-day fresh:
Keep them in a cool, dry and dark cupboard.
If they have started sprouting, just cut off any sprouts before using them.
Apples last up to two weeks longer in the fridge than in their original packaging.
If you buy them loose, store them in a reusable container in the fridge.
Keep them in a cool and dark place, but not the fridge.
They should also generally keep their distance from other fruit and vegetables.
Keep them in a paper bag or the original packaging in the fridge.
Once opened, keep them fresh by covering them with a folded tea towel snugly.
Avoid moisture to keep these fresher for longer.
Keep them in the fridge in their original packaging or in a container lined with a piece of kitchen roll.
Peppers can last up to two weeks longer in their original packaging in the fridge.
If you're only using part of a pepper, leave the stalk and seeds attached, then store in the fridge.
Store them in the fridge or on the counter to ripen them quickly.
If you're only using half, leave the stone in and sprinkle it with lemon juice to prevent browning, then store in the fridge.
More top tips
- Use best-before dates as a guideline but don't rely on them, usually it's just a recommendation for fresh fruit and veg. A general rule of thumb is that it'll be fine for a couple of days more than that, especially if you're storing it correctly.
- Freeze your fruit and veg before it has gone off to save it for even longer, pre-cut peppers and onions that have been frozen work great in a stir fry.
- Get better at meal prepping to use up any food before it goes off and save time cooking for the rest of the week.
