University is a whirlwind of experiences, growth, and challenges.
As a third-year student, Mercy Magaya (she/her), who is also the Communications Lead at Archwood House, shares 10 things she's learned that might resonate with or prepare you for your own journey at university and in halls.
1. Time Management is Key
Deadlines pile up quickly, so planning ahead is crucial. Invest in a planner or digital calendar to stay on top of assignments, projects, and your social life. Getting organized early will save you from unnecessary stress later.
2. Quality Over Quantity
In the beginning, you might feel pressure to attend every event and join every club. By third year, you realize it’s better to focus on a few meaningful activities that align with your goals. Whether it’s attending the freshers’ fair, checking out the Arts SU events, or popping into a HallsLife activity, explore what’s on offer and stick to what truly excites you.
3. Networking is a Superpower
Building relationships with professors, mentors, and peers can open doors to incredible opportunities. UAL offers countless networking events, from panel discussions to film screenings. Get involved—you never know who might inspire or connect you to your next big break.
4. Ask for Help
Don’t hesitate to reach out for academic support, mental health resources, or career advice. UAL provides free counseling, career services, and even casual coffee chats in halls. Help is always available, and the sooner you seek it, the sooner you’ll thrive.
5. Balance is Everything
Burnout is real. Learning to balance studying, socializing, and resting will make your university experience far more enjoyable and sustainable. Sometimes, taking a break is just as important as pushing through a deadline.
6. Internships and Work Experience Matter
Getting hands-on experience boosts your CV and helps clarify your career interests. Start with the UAL careers office for personalized advice or check out ArtsTemps, where you’ll find creative industry opportunities, from photography gigs to content creation roles.
7. Feedback is Gold
Constructive criticism might sting, but it’s one of the best ways to grow. Embrace feedback as a chance to improve rather than a personal attack—it’ll serve you well both academically and professionally.
8. Cherish the Little Moments
Some of the best memories are the simple ones: late-night study sessions, spontaneous hangouts, or corner shop runs with flatmates for a sweet treat. These moments are what make university life truly special.
9. Self-Care is Non-Negotiable
Taking care of your mental and physical health is essential. Exercise regularly, eat well, and set boundaries when needed. When you prioritize self-care, everything else becomes more manageable—and enjoyable.
10. The Future Isn’t as Scary as It Seems
It’s normal to feel overwhelmed thinking about life after university, but trust in your ability to adapt and succeed. You’ve already come so far, and your resilience will carry you through whatever’s next.
Whether you’re just starting your degree or heading toward the finish line, these lessons can help you navigate the highs and lows of university life. Keep learning, growing, and enjoying the ride!
