Your guide to opening a UK bank account

💰 Why you need a UK bank account

Once you've landed in London, sorting a UK bank account should be near the top of your to-do list, especially if it's your first one ever. Here's why it matters:

  • Receiving money from family or an employer
  • Everyday shopping and payments
  • Applying for or extending your student visa
  • Avoiding overseas card charges
  • Keeping your money safe
  • Withdrawing cash
  • Paying bills

🤔 Which bank should you choose?

The UK has plenty of banks to pick from, and many offer freebies or perks specifically for students. This guide by Money Saving Expert rounds up the top-rated student accounts, so it's worth a look before you decide.(Source: Money Saving Expert)

Once you've chosen a bank, you can either visit a branch or book an appointment to open your account.

🎫 What you'll need to open one

Before you head in, make sure you've got:

  • Your passport and student visa (or national photo ID if you're from an EU country)
  • A 'bank letter' from the university, if your bank asks for one. Request this from your college office
  • Proof of your home address in your home country. Your university offer letter or proof of enrolment sent to your overseas address usually works

📱 Skip the branch, go digital

Can't make it to a branch? App-only banks let you open an account from your room, no appointment needed. Your card usually arrives within a couple of days and can be sent straight to your hall.

These banks let you manage everything from your phone, with built-in budgeting tools that make it easy to track your spending.

Monzo and Starling are two of the most popular choices, but it's worth comparing a few to find the best fit for you. Once you've picked one, just download the app to get started.

If you think you'll need an overdraft, a student-specific account with an interest-free overdraft might suit you better. You can always open an app-only account alongside it too.
