Hello. My name is Rick and I am the Residence Manager at Cordwainers Court.
I've been here for twelve years, before that I ran a campsite for ten years and before that, well it’s so long ago that I can't remember! I do, however, remember studying Geography at university, so I'm very good at giving directions.
For many, this will be your first time away from home and for some of you, this may be a bit nerve-racking. Fear not, for the Cordwainers team are here to help and offer all the support and guidance that you may need along the way. You will find the admin officer Trui, maintenance man PK and myself in the office next to the common room Mondays to Fridays. Over the evenings and weekends, Wardens, Social Reps and the Wellbeing Peer will cover your security and pastoral needs.
I have always enjoyed working at Cordwainers Court because it’s small enough for me to get to know most of the students. My favourite part of the job is helping students through these challenging and exciting times and watching them grow into successful people.
One of the best things about the hall is that it's located in the middle of Hackney, one of London’s most exciting districts. It’s also very connectable, so don’t worry that the tube station is not outside your door. We have buses and other types of trains nearby.
My advice for all new students:
Keep the flat and your room clean and tidy. Sharing a flat with complete strangers is an exercise in communal living. Be prepared to empathise and compromise.
Be yourself but don’t be selfish. Treat others as you would wish to be treated yourself.
Finally, come with an open and enquiring mind and be prepared to embrace the different and the challenging. This is your chance to find out something about yourself and shine.
