Black History Month with UAL Social

By UALSocial 28 Sep 2020

Celebrate Black History Month and learn about Black culture, history and experiences with our range of free virtual events throughout October.

Black is rhythm dance session

Dance is a central aspect of Black culture and the community. It allows for personal expression and fosters the spiritual, emotional and social wellbeing of Black people. This virtual session will focus on learning, and of course, moving along to the beat of various dance styles: reggaeton, dancehall, twerking, soca and old school hip hop. Hosted by Bami Kuteyi who will be joined by several special guests, don’t miss out on this opportunity to learn about Black dance culture and pick up some signature moves along the way!

Black is beautiful life drawing session and discussion
Appreciate Black culture through art with our Black is Beautiful Life Drawing Session. This guided virtual workshop led by Soho Life Drawing, will focus on learning to depict Black culture instead of stereotypes. Whether you’re a novice or experienced drawing artist, this session is the perfect start to learning and understanding equitable representation while depicting Black culture through art.

Black is reel film night
Our virtual Black History Month centered Film Night will highlight the outstanding filmmaking talent from the Black community both inside and outside of UAL. Sit back, relax, and learn about Black culture and experiences through visual storytelling! Some of the issues covered in this film showcase include important topics like: Black excellence, mental health, microaggressions and racism.

Blackground
This virtual conference consists of five breakout sessions, highlighting topics such as: Black female leadership, allyship, untaught Black history, Black fashion, culture, and appropriation, and people of colour (POC) within the creative industries. From virtual panels, webinars, performances and workshops from UAL students and alumni alike, these informative and engaging sessions are all supportive spaces where you can learn and celebrate Black History Month and will encourage you to continue to do so even after October ends!
